Born November 21, 1774, near Rome, the thirteenth of fourteen children.
Elisabetta received an excelllent upbringing in her devoted and pious family. She entered into a very difficult and increasingly abusive marriage with Cristoforo Moro, which she resolved to endure with entire Christian faithfulness, never giving way to impatience or anger. She practiced heroic virtue in remaining to care for her children, and to offer all for the conversion of Cristoforo. She joined the Trinitatian Third order and opened her poor home to many seeking spiritual or material help, and especially reached out to families in trouble. She died on Feb. 5th, 1825. When Cristoforo came home after a night of carousing with his mistress to find her dead, he became overcome with grief and remorse, and repented of his sins, returning to God. He eventually entered the Franciscan Friars Minor Conventual and was ordained a priest, dying a holy death in 1845.
Pope John Paul II, in his homily of beatification on April 24, 1994 said that Elisabetta, "in the midst of numerous marital difficulties, showed total fidelity to the commitment undertaken by the Sacrament of Marriage and to the responsibilities that flow from it"
While one cannot say it is advisable to endure physical abuse, or extreme psychological abuse, one can still learn much from Blessed Elisabetta's devotion to her husband, the mortifications and penances she endured, offering all for the sake of his soul.
