Born Guido di Pietro. He entered the Dominican order in 1407 at Fiesole, Italy, and took the name Fra Giovanni.
He is also known as John (or Giovanni) da Fiesole, for this reason. Monastically trained as an illuminator, he showed great natural talent, and blossomed into an prolific artist of sacred subjects. So pure his intention and luminous his work, that he earned the name Fra Angelico, or angelic brother. For Fra Giovanni, his art was truly worship. The painting above, which depicts St. Dominic worshipping at the feet of the crucified Jesus, is traditionally thought to ba a facial self-portrait. |
