Mariana was a very pious youth. At age 23 she turned down a marriage proposal and instead became a Discalced Mercedarian nun at Madrid. She had a very intense prayer life within the order, and was noted for her spirit of penance and profound devotion to the Eucharist. Much that is known of her is the result of her obedience to her superior's order to write her spiritual autobiography.
She was born on the 17th of January 1565 at Madrid, Spain as Mariana Navarra de Guevara, and died on the 17th of April, 1624 at Madrid, Spain, of natural causes. Her body remains incorrupt.
Mariana of Jesus was beatified by Pope Pius VI. |
