Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born August 26th, 1910, in Skopje, Albania (which is now part of modern Macedonia). She joined the Order of the Sisters of Our Lady of Loreto in Ireland at the age of 18, taking the name "Teresa" after St. Teresa of Avila, patroness of Missionaries. She trained in Dublin and Darjeeling, India. In 1948 she experience a "call within a call" and left shelter of the convent to begin work with the very poorest of the poor. This beginning led to the founding of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity in 1950.
Without seeking it, she achieved renown throughout the world for her order's work among the poor. She died September 5th, 1997 in Calcutta, West Bengal, India of natural causes, shortly after her 87th birthday.
Who can tell the story of Blessed Teresa in a few lines? She was God's beloved little pencil, she wrote always faithfully as he dictated. After her death, her letters revealed that she suffered many doubts, and walked in darkness bereft of spiritual consolations, but she never wavered in her calling.
Pope John Paul II, who esteemed her highly during her life, elevated her to the ranks of the Blessed on October 19, 2003.
The cause for her Canonization is still ongoing--if you have information of benefit to Mother Teresa's Cause. please contact: Vice Postulator Father Brian MC Headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity Mother House 54/A Lower Circular Road Calcutta-16 West Bengal, India
