The saint for September 29
Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael
Universal Church Calendar

Antiphons from the Office of Readings:

"The sea grew turbulent and the earth trembled when Michael the Archangel came down from heaven."

"The angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah and said, your  wife Elizabeth  will bear you a son, and you shall name him John."

"I am the angel Raphael, I stand in the presence of the Lord; as for you, bless the Lord, and proclaim his wonderful deeds."

In the older Roman Calendar, these feasts were celebrated separately, but now we acclaim these exalted messengers of God in one Feast.  As St. Gregory the Great reminds us in one of his homilies, angels are messengers, and greater messengers are sent for the most exalted tasks.  What these great Archangels represent of God to us can be seen in their names:

Michael means "Who is like God?", and He is sent to show us the power and glory of God, especially in defense of His people.

Gabriel means "The Strength of God", and according to St. Gregory, "He came to announce the One who came as a humble man to quell the cosmic powers.  Thus God's strength announced the coming of the Lord of the heaveanly powers, mighty in battle."

Raphael means "God's Remedy" for he is sent to heal--as he healed Tobit's eyes with his touch.
