Born in 1521 in Sicily
Died in 1608 at Naples, Italy, of a stroke
Canonized in 1712
St Andrew (birth name Lancelota) was ordained in 1547, at the age of 26 and served as a canon lawyer in the ecclesial courts at Naples. However, in a heated debate in the courtroom, he perjured himself in defense of a friend. Horrified by this, he quit the courtroom and devoted himself to a life of penance.
He joined the Theatines at the age of 35, and served as novicmaster and later as superior of that order.
He was renowned as a reformer and spiritual director
He suffered a stroke while celebrating Mass, and died shortly thereafter, at the age of 86. |
